VR Headset Empty VR Headset

My boss' wife wants me to get him a VR headset for Christmas and said stay below $500. Does anyone have one here? Looked into them?

I'm thinking that i want to get him the PLAYSTATION VR, mostly because its in the price range and it has the motion controllers. I'd obviously like to get the Oculus Rift, but they are in the several hundreds of dollars.

I'd love for some opinions.

As far as VR headsets go, they appear to be hardware specific. Playstation VR is only compatible with Playstation 4. So if he doesn't have a PS4, then I wouldn't go that route. The following link might be helpful:
