Shortly after the Xbox Reveal event today, Microsoft revealed that its new console does not require a constant internet connection.

Weird that they didn't include that. Maybe someone forgot it or they didn't want that to be the takeaway point. That kind of makes sense. If you bring up that whole discussion all the awesome features get ignored and everyone goes "OMG why did they ever consider it?!?! PS3 blablabal"

I think this is the more likely scenario.

For pre-owned games, the Xbox One is designed "to enable customers to trade in and resell games," Microsoft said in the same Q&A post, promising more details later.

All games can be installed to the Xbox One's 500GB hard drive, removing the need for a disc entirely after the initial load-up, Microsoft tells Wired. If a second account wants to play that game the player will be asked to pay a fee and install the game on his own console. Whether this is a mandatory installation for every game, Microsoft says, "On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play."

Ahh, I suppose that's a more fair way for them to do it.
Charge some arbitrary amount to install a 2nd hand game ($5) and it'll work. Gives them some profit and lets people still get discounted games.

More details are needed. How much $ and will the PS4 work the same way? Need more info! Come on E3!

Well that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I can buy a game for full price, install it, give it to a friend, and for a small fee they can play it and then they can give it to a friend and they can play it for a small fee.

So multiple people can be playing the same game at the same time from the same original disc but only one would have actually paid for it.

The disk will probably need to be in the console in order to play it still.

That's would make sense. Installing essential processes and the running less important stuff off the disc. Good way to get more out of the discs/increase performance.

The quote does specifically say you don't need the disc in.

Yes, since this is my major sticking point I'm really interested in finding out the specifics regarding how the used game market will be handled.

It sounds hopeful. Only concern I could see is the price for the install.
I would imagine they'll have unique authentication for each disc that would require you to be connected to XBL to install the disc/make the payment. It would make sense that it would then deactivate the disc for any previous installs.

My only annoyance is if it's only good for 1 console. I will almost definitely have 'my' xbox, and then another in the living room for movies/casual gaming. Will I have to reactivate each time I switch?

I'd wait for an official statement.

I think the always on thing came from the fact that the box just goes to sleep so it can respond to your voice to turn on.

Update - Microsoft's Larry Hryb has issued the following clarification:

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

Key part to that though is while you are signed into your account. so lending a game to a friend they will have to pay??

yes if a friends uses it and that person is not using your account they will have to pay for it
