Gears Weapons Guide (under construction - finished through power weapons)
Well, played a decent chunk of MP and thought I'd review the weapons so anyone just picking up the game knows what is what. This list is in order from best to worst. Basically, they are listed in the order that you should pick them up if given the chance. Weapons marked by *** are very skill dependant. Meaning that if you haven't used them a lot and understand them, then skip over them. All weapons are good in their own situation, so there are always exceptions. Click the white box to see content
Main Weapons:
Power Weapons:
Grenades:
Pistols:
Heavy Weapons:
Main Weapons:
- Spoiler:
Sawed-off shotgun
This gun is absolutely ridiculous. If you're confident you can no-scope. I recommend holding in zoom, and aiming in their general direction. If they're within rolling distance and on your screen, it's an instant kill every time. Downside, super long reloads. It's best used as an ambush weapons or in conjunction with a teammate supporting. My favorite use is on gridlock at the sniper spawn. Just throw smoke, run up with this gun, and wait for someone to walk in (always at least 1 person comes through the smoke, or stands in it).
The downside to this gun? Aside from the reload it has no range. So you had better be comfortable with your other main weapon (or pistol) as this is only good in certain areas.
***Hammerburst
The Hammerburst. This has been the staple gun for me since Gears 1. It's extremely accurate, hard hitting, but hard to use. If you have a team with 3+ people all using the hammerburst from mid to long range they are nearly impossible to beat. To use properly pulse the trigger rapidly. You can shoot WAY faster than the default speed it shoots by doing this. Try it in warzone and you'll be amazed at how fast just 1 person can down someone out of cover. Then see what happens with a whole team. It really is almost an instant kill with teamshooting.
Downside? Bad close range (you should just never have it out close range), and difficult to shoot accurately. If try it out and don't like it, use the lancer. It's a lot easier to use.
***Gnasher (shotgun)
This gun dominated the scene for Gears 1 and 2. It still has potential too. It is great at shorter/mid ranges. Has a fast rate of fire. To use it correctly DO NOT SCOPE IN. Try shooting a wall and look where the bullets hit. That's where you need the opponent to be. Once you can no-scope you will put up huge numbers of kills. The problem is the sawed-off shotgun beats the gnasher every time. I can hit my no-scopes a good 80% of the time and have only beaten a sawed-off maybe one time, and I got lucky that one time. If the opponent has a stubby shotgun out, stay away. The best way to deal with them is to stay out of rolling distance. This makes the sawed-off useless, but the gnasher still does good damage. At this range you should scope in. 3 shots and they'll be downed. This is a pretty skill intensive weapons so I don't recommend it for everyone.
Lancer
This is Gears official 'staple weapon'. Very easy to use and pretty strong. It is weak at long range so don't try to beat someone peaking out with a Hammerburst. I find it is best used for cover fire. It does down people quick so if someone is trying to rush a powerweapon, they will be an easy kill. The chainsaw is good but most of the time when you get someone with it, you will die. If you're a casual player and want an easier time getting kills and contributing damage points use this gun. Chainsaw kills are still great, but costly.
Retro Lancer
This gun was ridiculous in the beta. It's still strong but not as good as it was. It is basically a close range machine gun. To use it correctly do not scope in. I'm not joking, just strafe and spray and you'll kill them. Good to use from cover against shotgun guys trying to rush you. The bayonet is cool but like the chainsaw almost always gets you killed. It is a fairly easy to use weapon but please do not use it as a mid to long range gun. You won't do any damage from that range.
Power Weapons:
- Spoiler:
- Digger Launcher
Not the easiest to use, but it has huge range, and gives you complete map control. If you ever get this on sandbar stand top middle and kill everyone that is in cover as they engage your team. To use this shoot where the enemy is or will be. If you haven't used it, basically it shoots a grenade that burrows until it runs in to an enemy. Meaning if a team is camping or sitting behind cover, you get an easy kill. At the very least you can push them out of cover. It's beast used by having a teammate charge, and shooting it right behind them. The enemy will usually not see the digger shot and will try to engage your team. Easy kill. Definitely the strongest power weapon.
Boomshot
The boomshot has been buffed since the beta. It used to take a lot of skill and precision to get kills with. Now? Just shoot close to the enemy feet and you get a kill. Great for killing people against walls/doors. I find it is a good defensive weapon if you stand back from an entrance and let the opponent come to you. If you ever run in to a situation where you're the last person alive get this weapon. In a 1v1 situation it is probably the strongest power weapon. I've seen countless games where people win 1v3's because they got a new Boomshot when it spawned.
***Torque Bow
In the hands of a good player, this weapons dominates. To use it hold in the right trigger once you know where you want to shoot. Do not aim until the torque bow is ready to shoot. This hides the laser aiming from the opponent. If you don't do this they will dodge WAY more often. Great range. It can also kill around corners but you have to place the arrow perfectly. This weapon is very skill intensive. I would say it's more difficult to use than any other power weapon. Definitely pick it up and practice with it when possible.
***Longshot
Hard to use. For it to be effective you should either left trigger aim and use it in conjunction with a teammate for a quick down, or go for the headshot. This is a positional weapon that requires you to know where to look. Once you find out where people often cover/walk that has an angle for a headshot you will get a lot of kills. It has potential to dominate a game in the hands of someone that can Left trigger aim and get headshots. Try it out and shoot at distracted enemies to get used to it.
Hammer of Dawn
Has a smaller damage radius in this game. It is still very strong but since it can't be used under any cover it's a very situational weapon. On certain maps it can control the game but with the long target time I would go for other power weapons first. Still, it's the Hammer of Dawn. Pick it up and throw down like you're Thor.
Scorcher
Honestly it hurt me to list this as a power weapon. It does so little damage that just about every regular gun (gnasher, lancer, etc) can beat it from even close range. If you run in to someone with it just start shooting, roll half way through the battle, and collect easy kill. You can use it to kill new players who freak out because of the flames but overall I avoid this POS gun.
Grenades:
- Spoiler:
Frag Grenade
Very strong, very easy to use. I prefer to plant grenades rather than throw the or tag someone. Best place to plant is the ground. Just look down and melee. The grenade will stick in the ground. It's best placed in high traffic areas near corners. Basically keep it out of sight. I've won a lot of games by letting an opponent chase me past where I planted a grenade much earlier. Throwing them is good against campers. Frag tagging is still an easy kill. Just run up with a nade out and melee. The problem is you usually die doing this. You also have to deal with the Sawed-off shotgun. Which will blow you away if you try to tag them.
Incendiary Grenade
Somewhat of a skill grenade. All grenades can be thrown, planted, or tagged. I usually throw the incendiary. IF you hit someone directly they basically melt and die instantly. Planted ones are very effective to help surprise an opponent. Great to use at power weapon spawns. I actually have not tagged someone with one yet but I imagine it's an instant kill. Definitely try it out, but again watch out for sawed-off's.
Ink Grenade
Smoke Grenade
Pistols:
- Spoiler:
***Boltok Pistol
Gorgon Pistol
Pistol (Default)
Heavy Weapons:
- Spoiler:
Mortar
Mulcher
One-Shot

Re: Gears Weapons Guide (under construction - finished through power weapons)
Still working on writing it all up.
I currently go in to matches with:
Gnasher / Lancer
I used to be a hardcore Hammerburst enthusiast. I've been watching a lot of pro streams and from what I've seen while the Hammerburst is strong the lancer has such a high fire rate that it is a better support weapon by far.
Also, I used to start every match with the sawed-off, and while I still find myself tempted to spike my controller when someone kills me while I'm in cover because they have a sawed-off, the gnasher is a significantly better weapon. Aiming is the easy part, learning how to move to dodge shots/position yourself for kills is crucial.
