S7 Anime Club Monthly Feature - October 2016

Well, I just rewatched the ending sequence like... 5 more times.

My current opinion...

Cart driver shoots and kills Zwei.

The whole show was about killing to live.

Ein turns around to smile at Zwei having accomplished their goal, sees him die - and her ambiguous ending isn't important to the series. Her monologue indicated she was okay living on, and the way they have her fade from the shot seem to hint at her doing what phantoms do, disappearing.

Zwei got to see her smile, the ending is sad as he dies and she sees it, but such is the tale.

I don't think she sees him get shot because he walks off on his own as she stares at the sky. And during the cart scene you don't see Ein around.

Going just by what we see, they're still in the same general area - she looks back to smile at him either as he dies or just after he collapses.
