Makes me wonder when I should unload my current console - will be close to worthless in a year and a half it sounds like. Probably won't buy too many games next year now.

Yup, I can't wait for Halo 4. I have very high hopes and a new console launching would bring me back to the Halo 2 days and the launch of the 360

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
I was reading some of the comments to the article and I guess some of those noobs really can't read and they suck at math too because they seemed to think 18 months was Xmas 2014, even though the the article specifically said 2013.
Anywho, didn't I read somewhere that the next Xbox wasn't going to be back comparable? Either way, I'll continue to buy games for this one and I probably won't sell it, but we'll see.

Well that kind of sucks. I bought the slim version of the 360 less than two months ago because I got the RROD with my first one. If the games available during its release are anything less than amazing I might hold off for a while.

There have been rumors that games won't be backward compatible due to the switch to Blu-Ray and you won't be able to play used games (very strongly doubt that one, but it's out there).
Here's one article talking about the used game rumor.

Yeah, no backward compatibility has sounded like a pretty unbelievable rumor from the start. Especially since a lot of games already have a digital version on XBL.

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
I remember the original XBox spins and reads discs backward from regular players, not sure if the 360 does that or what the next one will do. Could that be part of the backward compatibility issue?

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
Most BC issues come from the core processing unit. You either A) have to build an emulator for the previous hardware or B) actually include the original hardware. The problem is that both of these options cost a good bit of money and the trend is moving away from BC to save money.
Look at last gen compared to this gen. The PS2 was fully BC with the PS1. The PS3 (current PS3 models) is not BC at all with PS2. Same with the 360. The 360 can only play a select few original xbox games because the 360 was not fully intended to be BC.
The original PS3 is a slightly different story and was originally developed with the actual PS2 architecture. It is fully compatible with the PS2 games, but not PS1. This was later removed to save money.
Since the current gen is only about halfway BC at best, I think we will see a move away from BC all together. My personal opinion is that the next gen consoles will not be BC at all.

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
There's also that 'document' from MS that was leaked from 2010 that detailed the next gen console specs, smartglass, etc. There's debate on if it was real or not but that listed the Xbox 720 as having full backward compatibility.

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
Why do we (current 360 owners) care if it is BC? Your old 360 is not going to be worth anything anyhow, so keep it and play the 360 games you like on it, and when it becomes old and useless for gaming, use it for a Nexflix box. If I was MS I woud put BC below a cheaper price point at launch.

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
I just wish they would get away with hard disc media period. digtal download only or some kinda usb/sd enrypted password read only sh1t. if it is not BC let me mail MS my discs send me the code, download the game to hard drive and play on XB3 . The less sh1t I have cluttering up my house the better. I either DL music from Itunes or buy the cd,ripit to pc, then toss the cd in a box in the garage (too lazy to resale the cd but I should) physical media just gets in the way or gets broken. BluRays & DVD's are about the only hard media I have and I only about 20

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
Droopy I have to disagree. The only reason I am able to play so many games is because I can buy used copies and return the ones that I don't feel are worth holding onto. Digital copies of everything means that if you buy a game and don't like it, that's too bad because they aren't any returns. I don't mind disks in fact I prefer them over digital downloads of the very same game.

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
if they would make the switch to digital i would be down to do it this way ...
but i would return tell them they need to drop the price per game as they would not spend nearly as much on a digital as they would a disk to make /ship and so on

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
Imagine $40 games digital download
Digital game rentals $5 a week
Kiosks in big name stores that you bring your special USB drive that is linked to your Xbox and dl game on, for those without Internet
Xbox live rental subscriptions
No more GameStop or gamefly
Try before you buy dl games
More Cod elite style subscript services , not that that's a good thing
No leading games to anybody, bad thing
Game company's wouldn't lose any money from used or rental games
I mean gamefly is $17.31 a month for the cheapest plan
17.31 x12 =$ 207.72/ year give me unlimited digital Xbox game rentals for $200 a year or $20 a month and I'm sold hell if you only buy 2 games a year u still paying about $120 bucks! Hello future Im ready

Re: New version of Xbox in 18 months.
Or instead of even offering a $5 rental they could just have demos that allow you to play up to like lvl 5 for MP characters or the first couple levels of a game and then if you want you could just buy the game. That could help to deal with the people that don't want to go completely digital and then have a game they won't play. If you could play a good chunk of a game and it's co-op/MP (when available) you should be able to tell if you want to buy a game or not.
