That's Joe Satriani, probably the best guitarist/composer of our time. Lots of other greats out there, but you can watch his live shows for 3 hours of constant playing and it doesn't get old.

I'll just list some lesser known bands I like:

The Classic Crime - Their lead singer is ridiculous.
Girugamesh - J-rock
Maximum the Hormone - J-metal
Miyavi - Kinda like a japanese version of marilyn manson, but his music is better
I Am Ghost - Pretty cool band, songs are hit or miss. Killer Likes Candy and Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps are great.
Dispatch - If you haven't heard of them, you should listen.
