Atheon Fix Empty Atheon Fix

Post by S7 Interseptor Sat Oct 18, 2014 12:12 pm

Enjoy the cheese while you can (those of you who want too anyway).  The Atheon encounter will be patched with next weeks hotfix.  The two listed changes are:

- Baby Bumpers will be added to the Atheon fight arena to prevent pushing him off.  The developers state that pushing him off was a bug and bugs like this will be addressed as soon as possible.

- Timestream adjustment.  Atheon will now select three people at random to time travel, rather than the three people furthest away.

______________________________________

The first change is a welcome one to me.  I never felt pushing him off was the "right" way to achieve victory.  The Raid is a pretty special event and the fact that people could push him off in a few seconds cheapened the victory to those who fought hard to beat him in a more standard manner.  And while you can say "if you don't like it, don't do it", yes that's true but at the same time it devalues the whole event.  Some people would simply grab an Atheon (on Hard) checkpoint then spread that checkpoint to all of their friends and Alt accounts.  Then simply push him over and over again on all accounts just to get some easy Hard mode, end boss rolls.  This is just plain wrong in my opinion.  To not put any time into the Raid at all, grab a free checkpoint and some easy loot is almost cheating frankly and cheapens the event and loot for those who put in a lot of hard work to achieve.

/rant

The second change is interesting.  I am not against it per se, but it will certainly make the final event much more challenging.  Not a bad thing in itself but I have to wonder, if they intended three random guys to teleport, why did they program the furthest three in the first place?  Seems like if you wanted random people to teleport you would program it to do so. Whatever.  Better get ready for multi-role final boss fight fun!  Time to step up your game.

As a person that is guilty of doing the Atheon "glitch" I'm fully in support of the bumpers to keep him from falling off the edge.

I don't support the timestream selection change.  This completely takes away team roles and raids are all about being a team and knowing your specific role on that team.  Very bad change IMHO.

I agree and disagree at the same time.  I like roles and I like the strats we have developed.  I have an easy to follow, clear cut strat for everyone on the fire team.  Very specific roles for each person and it really helps for the final fight.  No confusion, no yelling.  It's solid and easy to execute (although I am always looking to tweak and improve said strat).  This is going to turn the whole thing on it's head now.  But is that a bad thing?  I don't know.  The Raid to me is about teamwork more then specific roles.  It's about working as a well oiled machine.  And more than all of that it's about communication.  This change will force communication more than ever before.

I liked my strat but you know what?  Now that we have it down, we could do the whole thing with muted mics.  No one has to call out anything.  I am sort of proud of that fact actually but I also look forward to a new challenge.  The challenge is what drives me.  The challenge is why I never cheesed Atheon and why I want to beat Hard mode 100% legit.  So I say bring it on!  I know my team can adapt and come out victorious.

I know the couple times I was "accidentally" one of the farthest back started off pretty rough for me.  I don't volunteer for the time travel role but I have a general idea as to what to do, so I'm a little more comfortable.  I'm clueless when it comes to the relic but I can drop into most of the other roles with ease so I think this shouldn't be too bad of a change.

Looks like I will finally have to get used to using the Relic. Usually differed to someone that knows what they are doing with it. I kind of think it is a stupid change as it throws any planning out the window and forces the weaker or inexperienced players into roles they are not used to or ready for. I think Bungie underestimated the player base and are calling the change a fix for a bug, when it is in fact is a cheap way to increase the difficulty of their hardest content.

I don't really mind the second change either. They've been implementing changes each patch to slightly increase the difficulty of the raid. It was nice being able to (without cheesing) have 1 relic guy like myself cruise through and smash everything. But if they're changing it that's cool. It will make the end boss fight a little more exciting/difficult.

This change will make the players bring to the raid the skills and knowledge Bungie had previously wanted.  Now your team will not only have to be properly geared up but they'll have to be versatile.  Sure it's nice to have set jobs for everyone but I'm pretty sure that wasn't what Bungie was originally planning when it came to the raid.

And this is from a director at bungie a month before release:

It's about the group dynamic. It's not just about a casual dynamic. It's about an understanding of people committed to playing the roles in raids. And preparing. With raids, you don't just jump into them. You've got to prepare before you go in, and decide, what are you doing? What am I doing? Let's all talk about it in orbit. Okay, what role are you going to play? Well, I'm an x Titan, whatever type of Titan I am, and I'm going to be defensive and hold positions. And, have you played this before? Yeah, I found success when I did it this way.
orry puppet, but I think you are wrong....

At least 4 of the 6 will need some proficiency with the relic now. There's still room for 2 to not be any good with it.

The YouTube videos made it look easy to push him off the edge, but having watched many attempts it seems much harder than that. Everything has to go perfectly with his random movements and the grenade throws. Videos don't show the many failed attempts.

That's some good info Z, I was just hazarding a guess as to why they wanted to make the change.  According to that statement, they're going against their intentions of how the raid should be played.  Either way, I'm fine with what they do to the raid.

So far the PS4 crew has been able to knock out the normal raid with ease and we're working some strats for the hard raid, we just need more bodies at 29/30.  If I have to do more time travel and relic work, that just means I have to stretch my play style and increase my skills, both of which make me a better player and more useful member of a fire team.

I really don't mind the changes to the raid except the teleportation fix for reasons I already stated and even that is manageable as long as u have at least 3 to 4 people that know how to use the relic. I am just annoyed that they tried to say that the current teleport mechanic was a bug when it really just boiled down to their raid not being as hard as they thought it was going to be.

Totally agree.   I'm not fine with how they've explained and handled it.  It's clear from earlier comments, like the one posted, that they fully intended on people playing certain roles and having a solid strategy to play the raid.  Then they pull this crap.  It's not a bug, it's Bungie changing the way the raid functions on a whim.

Will we adapt?  Sure we will, but that doesn't change the fact that I think Bungie is full of sh1t.

They should just leave this raid alone and make a new one.

Yes, it will still be available.  Can I confirm that?  No, but it wouldn't make sense not to have it still.  The next raid will just be the next step up.

December, and I hope VoG is still available when the new one launches.  I'd be nice to have a few Raid options as they are the most fun event in the game right now.  It would suck if they dropped it or only brought it back for special events.

Complete guess but to add on I wouldn't be surprised if the "Normal" version of the next raid started at level 28-30 and the "hard" raid was like 32-34 or something.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a level cap boost.  With a game like this they have to constantly hold that carrot out there so keeping the max level at 30 wouldn't be wise IMO.

I have heard the new Raid Hard will be 32 from some leaked info.  Not sure if that means the level cap is boosted or not.  My guess is the new Raid Gear is even better.

Makes total sense and falls in line with what I was thinking.  I agree that it will probably be better raid gear stats (more light).  Thinking they'll leave the soft cap at 20.

It would be nice to have double the raid options, either 2 normal and to hard runs, 2 double loot hard runs, or some combo thereof.

So anyone get to Atheon yet?  XBros?  I know we only did Hard mode last night and only got to Templar before people had to bail.  If you got there, how did it go?

Ahh, cool.  Thanks for the update and post back here once you get a chance to see the new Atheon.  I'll be interested to see how it goes.
