New Monitor
Hey guys I just got my Asus monitor in the mail and I am having trouble with the picture. I can't get it clear enough. Any suggestions on settings for the picture.
Re: New Monitor
It could be that you need to change the resolution on the xbox or the monitor itself. Also some setting like contrast and brightness can help to make the image sharper but like epic said need a better description.
Re: New Monitor
I changed the resolution already. I am just asking the settings like brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc.

Re: New Monitor
Your monitor should have pre-set profiles that change all of those. Try going through them and choose one that looks best.
If it still looks bad, your xbox is probably set to Standard def. Change it to the highest definition that works.
If it still doesn't look good, use a different (better) cable. HDMI is a good choice.

Re: New Monitor
If you went through all the monitor profiles, made sure the xbox was on 1080p, and are using an hdmi you need to:
1st - Try a different HDMI cable to see if that one is bad
Then send that monitor back ASAP and get it replaced. If it looks bad, it's probably defective.

Re: New Monitor
Its fine nothing ia wrong with it. I am just trying to get the perfect picture you know.
Re: New Monitor
In that case it's different for every monitor, every room, every distance, every game, movie, etc.
In general monitors are set for 'Display'. AKA they should look good in a bright wall full of monitors in a store.
Just tweak it around until you like how it looks in the room. No one else will be able to help much as it greatly depends on the monitor, the surrounding decor, and the ambiant lighting.

Re: New Monitor
I'm thinking the monitor is not that great.
No offense, but Asus is not known for great products just cheap priced ones.

Re: New Monitor
I have to disagree with you. Asus is a great brand and their monitors are one of the best ones out there.

Completely agree with you. I think this is the first time I've seen them referenced as a cheap brand.

This is absolutely untrue. You're asking for advice so I'm just relaying knowledge on the subject. I understand grabbing decent performance on the cheap, but they are not one of the best out. From my experience I have only trusted NEC monitors, Dell ultrasharp displays and a few Samsung displays that guarantee 100% sRGB reproduction. This is assuming of course that you need a great monitor for what you're doing. You're asking about the crisp clean display so I assume you want it to look good. I know that if you're going to be using this monitor for gaming you might want the get some more details on repsonse time and contrast ratio. Always good to be an educated consumer. I could easily go into talking about the itu-r bt.709 standard on monitors and television displays or the xvYCC color space standards set by Sony and others (a highly saturated color chart consisting of 48 hues and 16 levels of lightness, for a total of 768 colors used for the assessment of color representation by display devices), but that conversation gets extremely scientific and complicated so this is not the place to discuss luma coefficients, 2.2 gamma output, or the needed transfer characteristics required for this monitor to be placed on the level of "one of the best".
Again I mean no offense and it will work well, but once you've tweaked the contrast, brightness, etc. you pretty much have the best you're going to get. If you're not happy with the way it looks when you boot up the best option is to spend a bit more and get a much better monitor.
**Just on a side note, this is what I have college degrees in (computer science)-- and what I do for a living for the Govt. to feed my children so trust me on this and any other computer related topics as I am not trying to steer you wrong.

Re: New Monitor
Too bad NEC consistently has some of the worst input lag times in the industry. Not a big deal for anything except gaming.

Re: New Monitor
Contrast ratio is the ratio between the display’s blackest black and its whitest white. A contrast ratio of 1,000:1 is respectable — 2,000:1 is stellar. Ignore the misleading “dynamic contrast ratio” manufacturers often promote which can be millions to one . It is artificially derived and misleading.
Couldn't quite find a really good article for you to read on monitors, but C|net is talking about TVs here. Still it explains better and maybe you'll take their word that there is no 5 million to 1 ratio...apparently you think I'm giving you B.S.

From the article:
"A bright image is bright, a dark image is dark. Done well, this does increase the apparent contrast ratio of a display, but not nearly as much as the numbers would suggest. A 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio would be unbelievable to look it. Too bad one doesn't exist."

Re: New Monitor
I dont doubt you know what your talking about but Asus is not a cheap brand and I would prefer them over anybody else
Re: New Monitor
Again, I'm not knocking your purchase. Let's get back to the basics. You've bought it and wanted to know the best you could get from it. You said you'd done all the things everyone told you to do in order to get a better display.
All I'm saying is if you have the xbox set at 1080 and the monitor on the best resolution, you're probably looking at the best Asus can get. But spend a bit more and buy a different monitor and you get a better picture.
That's all I'm saying. Asus is ok but NOT one of the best. Actually quite far from it.

Re: New Monitor
It's also worth pointing out that for gaming there is a huge difference between response time and input lag.
Response time is what everyone throws on the box to look cool. 2ms is the standard. Input lag is almost never listed on any box, printable, book, etc.
Input lag is caused from a variety of factors, but the basics are the signal must be converted to display on the screen. Some sets do this EXTREMELY fast, others take upwards of 15-20ms.
So if you have a 'sweet' gaming tv with a 2ms response time, but 20ms of input lag - well you're getting very close to a noticeable delay, like having things feel "off". Throw in standard latency from your internet connection and you will notice it.
That's why I like viewsonic for my monitors, they have extremely low input lag times. I think most asus monitors are on the faster side (under 10ms)
