human body breaking sound barrier
idk if you have heard about the sky jump planned for today

Red Bull Stratos, a mission to the edge of space, will attempt to transcend human limits that have existed for 50 years. Supported by a team of experts Felix Baumgartner plans to ascend to 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon and make a freefall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting to the ground. His attempt to dare atmospheric limits holds the potential to provide valuable medical and scientific research data for future pioneers.
The Red Bull Stratos team brings together the world's leading minds in aerospace medicine, engineering, pressure suit development, capsule creation and balloon fabrication. It includes retired United States Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger, who holds three of the records Felix will strive to break.
Joe's record jump from 102,800 ft in 1960 was during a time when no one knew if a human could survive a jump from the edge of space. Joe was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and had already taken a balloon to 97,000 feet in Project ManHigh and survived a drogue mishap during a jump from 76,400 feet in Excelsior I. The Excelsior III mission was his 33rd parachute jump.
Although researching extremes was part of the program's goals, setting records wasn't the mission's purpose. Joe ascended in helium balloon launched from the back of a truck. He wore a pressurized suit on the way up in an open, unpressurized gondola. Scientific data captured from Joe's jump was shared with U.S. research personnel for development of the space program. Today Felix and his specialized team hope to take what was learned from Joe's jumps more than 50 years ago and press forward to test the edge of the human envelope.

Oh no- I forgot about that. It was going to be a live broadcast and I wanted to watch. It's been interesting reading up on what all is involved, plus the trial runs he has already done.

Still on stand by but they are inflating the ballon and reporting that the winds are dying down and launch is looking good.

Re: human body breaking sound barrier
That was absolutely awesome to watch.
That guy has got some freakin huge balls to do that. But the part I found even more interesting is no one has tries to beat the highest sky dive jump before that was set back in the 60s. I also was interested to find the guy that set that record was the only guy who could talk to him on the head set and 84 year old guy. So cool. I am glad I was able to watch that.

Re: human body breaking sound barrier
well for sure he holds two world records today
Highest Ballon Exit @ 128,100 Feet
Broke sound Barrier @ mock 1.24
in official report of free fall is 4:20 sec which is just shy of the world record

Re: human body breaking sound barrier
Yep, that was a blast to watch. It was really intense when they focused in on him during the free fall and he was in a spin. They had been worried that if he went into a spin at that altitude he could back out or even die (with no resistance from the thin air the spin can get dangerously fast very quickly). Also his visor was fogging/frosting up and he couldn't see. If you were watching it live you might have noticed after he said his visor was fogging up and the flat spin started they cut the audio. Some how he recovered and got into that head first dive. Pretty crazy. They did have the clock going for the record, and I noticed he opened a little early. I haven't read the full report, but at the time they thought it might have deployed the shoot because he couldn't see.
Seriously, moving in a jet or rocket or something at 800+ miles and hour is crazy, but plummeting head first towards the earth in a free fall that fast is just ludicrous (<-Space Balls Pun). Then to see him just basically walk onto the earth gently upon landing was such a sharp contrast to the entire event. Great stuff.
One thing that would have made it better - Mission control should have told him "Be careful of that first step, it's a doozy!"

Re: human body breaking sound barrier
I'm sure there are better videos. That one was edited where you go from 40 seconds to 4 minutes in one cut. I know watching someone fall to earth for 4 minutes might not seem that exciting, but with the spin and everything it is very cool. Really the ascension was cool too. Now I only watched about 40 minutes of the 2 hours, but seeing the safety checklist and balloon expand and all that was cool and built up the tension.
He had lots of cameras and sensors on his suit (it wasn't just a daredevil stunt, but for science-lol) so we might get some rather cool videos of the fall from his point of view.
