its sayssix times faster then the current xbox
i rofls that it will still be slower then most mid end gaming pc's
i would say since MS makes it they should just do like they do with PC's here the basic to play a game how ever you can upgrade it as much as you want
even if this means they make there own line of xbox only GPU ,CPU,HDD and so on i would be down to do it
and they would make alot of money from it
It says six times as powerful, not fast. The distinction is important.
The 360's CPU is about as powerful as a decent Core2Duo and the ram it has is minsicule (512mb shared, iirc).
So, I'd estimate the total specs of the 720 to be equivalent of a mid-2011 gaming laptop, or low/mid-tier desktop.
Since consoles are only 1080 it'll be plenty enough to run games like Crysis 2, BF3 on ultra and still get 60 fps. I think further graphical improvements are going to have to be largely software based, with DirectX 12/13. That said, at least we'll have a ton more disc space with blu-ray, so textures will be great.
At the end of the day though, it's all speculation. The AMD chip may be a VERY heavily customized 6-series, hence why they would stick with it over a 7-series, and we don't really know much about the CPU yet, so I guess we'll have to wait until E3. Food for thought though, the Unreal Engine tech demo from last E3 was running on a Quad-SLI, super beefy CPU rig, which is far, far, far, more powerful than a 360, which you'd expect for $5000, but it makes you wonder how far off we are from seeing that type of tech on a console. I'd imagine even PC users are still a fair way from seeing that stuff in action, barring some major code revision.
In regards to making their own customisable console, I don't think that would be their best interests in regards to ROI. Also, part of the whole console 'thing' is that they're all pretty much equal. Upgrade to provide any significant performance boost would be nullified by the fact that most developers wouldn't develop the game with them in mind as upgraders would undoubtedly be the minority, especially considering the price of low-volume, 1st party, custom-spec hardware - from Microsoft!

I tend to think that the chip they use in th next Xbox is not going to be a chip that is available now for any one to buy.

That wouldn't be such a problem if they use the correct system/tech. Think Torrents, where the more people DL'ing, the more speed as it's DL/UL/Share all at the same time. Just a thought, but if the pirates can do it, why can't MS?

I torrent frequently and with my 8mb line, downloads are only about 500k-1mb/s. sharing would detract from your upload speed and you'd not be able to play online whilst doing so. Servers are easily the fastest way to DL but obv. they are prone to getting overloaded.
They could allow pre-orders, downloading it early, but make it not accessible until the appropriate date (confirmed by online connection not the console date/time). I don't see that it would be that tough. But stores like to have physical "stuff" to sell, so they would be cutting them out. And there are a lot of jobs (albeit in foriegn countries) in producing the discs.
