Gears Of War: The Board Game Coming This August

Fantasy Flight Games has announced they are releasing a board game based on Epic Games' uber popular Gears of War franchise. Simply titled Gears of War: The Board Game, Amazon currently has the game listed with a release date of August 31st.

The game comes complete with 30 plastic characters, a number of cards, tokens, map tiles and two sets of dice, and can be played by up to four people, as C.O.G members Marcus, Baird, Cole Train and Dom lock chainsaws once again with the Locust through seven missions.

It doesn't look that bad to me. The stigma is in that the initial reaction is "lolwut, gears as a board game?"

If you think of it not as an offshoot of a video game, and instead as another tabletop, it's quite easy to digest IMO. You can see standard tools in there like the attack range ruler, line of sight restrictions, and Attack vs Armor rules.

Panzer, I implore you to experience gaming outside of video games. Tabletops are fun as hell, you can't play crap games like Life or Monopoly, or Sorry or Parchese and expect very good results.

The good games aren't really mainstream. Go play Settlers of Catan or Arkham Asylum or DnD 4e or 3.5e.

The pleasure you can get with rolling dice with random people at the shop, or with your close friends in your dining room is a different rush than playing video games with people across the world. I'm not saying it's better, but definitely a different rush, a different pleasure to hold your player token and move it, to declare a minor action and let the DM approve it, and roll a success and just laugh your asses off at what the DM comes up with.

One of my favorite stories to tell about how I first got into DnD was a bullshit game at the local shop. We started a quick game using off the cuff silly classes with a basic stat sheet. We walked into a cave full of gnolls and our Disco Wizard threw up his Disco Ball and our Cleric smited the Disco Ball, doing 2 x d4 + 4 light damage against every gnoll in the place due to refraction of the spell with a successful > 18 roll (which was the only way the DM would allow such a silly move. Well, they hit every gnoll and the table just sat laughing their heads off at it.

Not impressed. They have/had great ideas in there but it just falls short. IF I were to play this once I'd probably only get through 5 mins. and never, never, never, never play it again....EVER!
