Klown have you seen this new mustang?
800-horsepower Mustang on the way
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- An 800-horsepower version of the Ford Mustang will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this month.
The 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be built by Shelby American Inc., a Las Vegas-based performance car company. Shelby works with Ford Motor Co. to create various high-performance versions of the iconic Mustang.
While the base Super Snake will produce a mere 750 horsepower, those who feel the need for more power will be able to add an optional upgrade package that will provide 50 more. Shelby provides no warranty on the engine and transmission, in either case.
The base version of the outgoing 2011 Super Snake produces 630 horsepower, although no-warranty option packages have been available in recent months to push horsepower in those cars up to as much as 800, as well.
The 2012 Super Snake will be legal to drive on public roads on all 50 states, the carmaker promised, and it will cost less than $100,000.
Prices for the 2011 Super Snake start about $80,000 in total, including the separate purchase of a car from Ford -- a factory-produced Shelby GT500 -- and the necessary modifications.
"Shelby American has a rich history at the New York International Auto Show," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. in an announcement. "The very first Shelby car was introduced there in 1962, as well as the 1968 and 2008 Shelby GT500KR and the 2006 Shelby Hertz GT-H."
The original partnership between Ford and Shelby American founder Carroll Shelby, one that resulted in Mustang-based performance cars that can be worth millions of dollars today, ended in 1969. Ford and Shelby entered into a new agreement in 2003 that has produced a new line of Shelby Mustangs, some built by Ford Motor Co. and others built at the Shelby American factory.

Shame it's front end is hideous.
For that price you could get a nice car, plus an Ariel Atom for some track racing...it'd be a lot faster than that 'stang.

Yeah i thought the exact same thing
Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
I dont think you would see the front end for long went it went by you at 100 mph.
Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
You'd see it many times in your rear-view as you lapped it around the circuit.

To answer the question, yes I've seen the new mustang. As for the design of the front end, to each his own I suppose but I love it (front, back, engine, rear design, all of it!). As for the constant BS talk about how you'd run laps around it and beat it...yeah, right
Here's last year's or "this years" model (2011)

Congrats, your Mustang can almost match the lap time of a Cobra from the sixties.

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
dude what are you talking about? that cobra (made by the same man btw) is a true beast. There has been nothing that can compete with that until now. You use that as the benchmark...and it was created for racing not daily commutes. there have been restrictions that prevent a car that fast from being manufactured and allowed on the roads (this isn't the autobahn). Not to mention other than Shelby there hasn't been anyone able to pull that much torque and power from a engine other than for NASCAR. We're talking an 800Hp street legal vehicle that any/everyone can purchase and drive. Not something to turn your nose up at. Give me one other manufacture creating 800Hp vehicles that you'd see sitting in the shopping mall or dropping grandma off at church on Sunday...just one? that's what I thought.

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
OK, I have to jump in here...
So why do you need 800hp when you can get the job done with less? That Ariel Atom would run circles around that Mustang, only has 550hp and is completely street legal. Hell, even the original Atom only had 300 hp and would still stomp that at the track. And that one only costs $50K (and still completely street legal).
Frankly 800hp, while very impressive, is too much without proper engineering. Basically in a RWD car it means you can only go fast in a straight line which is why it failed to beat the Cobra at the track. The Cobra won't break lose in the corners due to it's enormous rear tires and much more reasonable 500hp engine.
Take the Mercedes AMG Black for instance. It's one of the most powerful Mercedes available to the general public with something like 600+hp. But pretty much everybody says it's sh!t because you can't effectively put all those horses to the ground without lighting up the tires and losing traction. And while it might be fun to burn through $2k worth of tires it makes for a sh!tty track time.
You'll have the same problem with the Super Snake. Impressive numbers but pretty much rubbish for anything but a straight line.
Personally for me, for around 100k (same basic price of the Super Snake) I would take one of these...
The Audi R8 - Whose base version with a 4.2L V8 (420hp) will beat the Super Snake both from 0-60 and 1/4 mile, as well as clean up at the track. And that is before you upgrade to the 5.2L V10 (530 hp)

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
I can dig what you're selling Interseptor. Basically Epic is trying to down play the Mustang in everyway to say it's crap and he's always got something better. Great, but give the d@mn car and Shelby their due respect you know. Personally you're right, you don't need 800Hp in any capacity unless you're doing something illegal. There's no real reason to have anything that will go that fast either corners or straight stretch...no reason unless you're a state trooper or something. That said, we as humans (and especially Americans) just like everything bigger, faster, and louder. So we keep pushing the envelope. No, it's not needed, and yeah the Audi is a great alternative but you'll been seen as a rich little b#tch not a true muscle car enthusiast or gearhead when you pull up.

I think that looks bad ass - yeah, it may not use its HP efficiently so it needs a ton, but I bet it sounds awesome!

Hey, I like mustangs. I like American muscle in general. They [mostly] look great, are comfortable as hell and are a great alternative to Grand Tour cars, at least in the USA, in Europe they'd be far too large fr street driving.
I wasn't knocking the Shelby, I love that car, it's an all-time classic up there with the old Lancias, Jags, Mercedes, Jensens, etc. but in terms of comparisons for running laps, I thought it was a weak example. Had it been versus a something a little more conventional, like a 911 or M3, then fair enough.
As far as the Atom goes, I [wrongly] assumed that you knew it was road legal. The $50k version alone goes 0-60 in 2.9 and gives around 500bhp per tonne, that mustang will get around 450 per tonne. In regards to cornering, well, that speaks for itself. The atom puts a lot of super (and even hyper) cars to shame. Granny would be at church in no time flat, can't imagine she'd be pleased with the state of her hair though...
I was simply trying to point out that massive horsepower doesn't always mean that much, hell, the 1000+ bhp, street-legal Veyron sucks around the track, even on Nurburgring it wasn't able to hold the record for long. As you said, you don't need anywhere near the levels of performance we're talking on the street, hence why I recommended an Atom for some fun on the track AND a decent road car, all for the same price as that 'stang. I guess it could take the Mustang 'round a track, like you can with any car, but having driven an Atom (and a Mustang - 2009 model though) around a track it's hard NOT to want to sing it's praises to everyone and anyone, lol.

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
No, sorry Epic I don't know a whole lot about the Atom. Then again it's hard to think of that as a true commuter vehicle. It looks more like a dune buggy I once owned...just far more powerful.

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
My point exactly, you're comparing apples and oranges. Remember you're comparing racing cars to a car built for the city...that just happens to go really fast. We're talking about a Mustang with an 800Hp engine but with leather seats, DVD CD player/XM radio, digital GPS, push button ignition, AC & heat--all the creature comforts one could ever want but the power to pull away from it all when needed. I'll take the Shelby and get there in style! Plus if memory serves from the video he said the Atom was 500HP or something to that effect....he never said 800hp right?

Re: Klown have you seen this new mustang?
The V8 Atom is 500, the $50k original is 300. However, they're both magnitudes lighter than the 3,900lb Mustang. F1 cars are only 600 bhp.
My point was though, that you could have an Atom in addition to a conventional road car (a used 2010 Porsche can be had for less than $50...).
It's a given that for the same price, the majority of super cars out there would put in better laps. Vantage, 911, R8, etc. I was just pushing the Atom because it is amazing.
