Wow, before USB 3.0 can even take hold, Light Peak is about to blow the doors wide open in 2011.

During the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijin, Kevin Kahn, an Intel
senior fellow, said Intel's goal is to "build the last cable you'll ever
need." That comes off as a curious statement when you consider that
Light Speed would add yet another cable to an already cluttered fray,
but Light Peak is being designed run multiple protocols simultaneously.
The philosophy here is one cable to rule them all, though Intel insists
they're not trying to kill off USB 3.0. Instead, Intel expects "both to
exist together in the market and perhaps on the same platform." For
those of you still worried about a format war where consumers ultimately
pay the price, Intel was showing off a Light Peak cable at IDF that
connected to a laptop's USB 3.0 port. It remains unclear if this would
be the standard port for Light Speed, but Kahn did say it would be a
good starting point.
