tablet help

So I'm thinking of getting my father a tablet for christmas, but I know nothing about tablets.  He's basically on his phone a lot going on facebook, playing games, etc, so I thought maybe I could get him something with a bigger screen.  It doesn't need to be anything fancy.  My brother told me it should have Google Play, it'll likely be a 7" to 9" tablet, and I don't want to be spending over $200. I just need some advice as to what some good brands are, or what I should definitely avoid.

I would wait until black friday and look for a deal then. I would recommend avoiding all the cheap no brand name tablets.

I was going to wait until black friday, just curious about what brands I should be on the lookout for when that time comes.

Kaiti just got the 7" Galaxy Tab 3 and absolutely loves it. She had an ipad previously.

So, Galaxy Tab 3 is solid.

Nexus 7 is also a very nice option.

I had the original Nexus 7 and love it. It has even taken some punishment with a single drop from chest height while still working ( scratches though ). You could also look into the Nexus 10 which is a glorified Nexus 7 with 10'' of screen. Asus also have a good lineup of tablets as they are the producer of the Nexus 7.

My wife has a Kindle Fire and she likes it.  I think the new HD ones are like $250 and will probably be sub $200 for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

would have to agree  Galaxy pwns Ipad anyday

Galaxy tab 3 on amazon for $179. I've never used one but I have heard good things and Atrum says its good so I would go with that

Not sure we're that comes from the only thing that the galaxy tab has on the Ipad mini 2 is storage being expandable via sd card slot.  And sure price.
Ipad mini 2 better resolution, better camera, better processors, better marketplace.
Yeah it might be a fan boy but help me out were does the galaxy own the ipad???

Sometimes a OS makes all the difference.

That's all preference. Oh and Samsung is still on 4.1ish andriod so that shinny new 4.4 kit kit not happening on that device for a while. That type of thing would drive me nuts oh sorry this is a samsung device you update only when we let you.

iPad is too expensive for me anyway, and probably not a good choice for my father.  Also with the $600-700 I'm going to be spending one the Xbox One, I don't want to be spending a lot on a tablet. 
Plus, I'd rather keep apple products out of the family anyway.  I'm anti-apple xD.

That's cool i didn't suggest iPad because of the price.

Yeah, the performance was identical from my usage between the ipad mini 2 and the galaxy tab 3. Marketplaces have finally balanced out too. I didn't want to be biased so I had kaiti go try them both out in store (I told her they both cost the same) and she still wanted the Galaxy Tab 3. (Oh, and that's why I now have my XBO and 2 games paid off)

iPad mini 2 just came out today so she used the mini one. Both great but the 2 now has a retina display and better processor.
