Gamestop trying to fight back...
Last week, a GameStop spokesman alluded to internal research that the company said showed consumers were significantly less likely to buy a console that wasn't able to play second-hand games, but it wouldn't reveal the specific results of that survey. Now, a GameStop executive has said publicly that three out of five customers it surveyed said they wouldn't buy such a system.
GameStop: 60% of customers won’t buy console that doesn’t play used games
I didn't get surveyed, but I'm in the 60%. Man, I'm hoping really hard that the next gen's allow used games.

Still, to think that GameStop surveyed their customers and only got a little over half, would not worry MS or Sony much. I mean, a business that makes money selling used games, surveying shoppers who are probably there to buy used games, running a survey on used games, and only gets 60%? If I was the GS CEO, I would not have posted that, as I would expect 75% or better of my customers to support me.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
I is just disappointing to see Sony and Microsoft take this direction it could really hurt/destroy companies like Gamefly, Gamestop/ EB games, and another other big rental store. I feel in this overall change will hurt console gamers and companies that support them. As a person that mostly plays only PC games its just another reason to stay where I'm at.
Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
I know GameStop is trying to save their business and all, but I really don't think that number will matter once the new systems release. I'd be willing to bet that most of that 60% will end up buying either system in the end, whether the systems play used games or not.

It really just depends on how many of those 60% use gamefly consistently. I use gamefly all the time and play tons of games but I rarely buy new ones. Telling me I can't play used games isn't going to convince me to all of a sudden start buying them new just because they say so.
With all that said, I may still end up buying one just because my friends will want to play with me online, lol.

That's the main reason why I said what I said. People aren't going to give up gaming, basically, because of this.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
Yup, that's probably what MS and Sony will have decided as well if they go with the 'no used games' policy.
It's going to suck for people that rent or buy used, or have a job at Gamestop.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
The question I have is will game prices remain at $60 or will this be yet another reason to boost the price? New technology, new gaming engine, new experience, games are now in 3D, IllumiRoom display, blah, blah, blah. Suddenly these new games are $80 a pop and since Xbox and PS are doing it you have to buy it because they are the "only game in town" so to speak.

That is pretty cool Klown. If they can create a reasonable price sperical camera like in the bottom diagram, it would be cool and integrated into the kinect sensor, even if you didn't use it all the time.

You sure? They do this to you everytime you buy a game followed immediately by a DLC package.
It's just broken down so you don't feel the pain. $60 + $15 adds up to $75 no matter how you slice it. Perhaps the marketing dept. starts putting out ads saying "now with DLC included" or something. But it's all the same.

Honestly, if the retail price for console games rise, then you're probably going to see retail price for PC games to rise just the same.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
Things are going to be pretty bad for Gamestop. They are talking it'll be mandatory to download all games to xbox720 HDD. That means I can buy the new Tomb Raider from my living room and download to my xbox (actually, you already can now if you want) but this means since you don't have a choice there's no reason at all to go to gamestop for a disc. The store will only sell consoles and the 80 page gamer guide followed by eventually downsizing and then when those aren't keeping the business afloat going out of business.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
plus if its a digital copy meaning they did not have to pay company's like
activision to make millions of hard copy's there should be no need to jack up prices that high i could see mybe game 39.99 plus an added 5 bucks for the DL server for the game and if u wanted to add the first round of dlc then 59.99
i think if they went all digital it would hurt publishing company alot more they would move to an almost all server base set up fire ALOT of people and get ride of there Assembly line for making a disc game which im sure is alot of money

The physical media is not very expensive. I would venture to say it cost < 1.00 for box, artwork, dvd and packaging. All the money is in the content. That is why you will not see a decrease in prices when it goes to downloads only.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
sad to hear.
however this wont hurt the BIG retailers like Best Buy, target, walmart.
the ones i can see going out of business are gamestop and the little no name game stores.
But regardless of what that "survey" says, people are going to buy the systems. whether its playstation or xbox.
sh1t like this happens. sh1t evolves. look at the whole video rental business. Blockbuster is out at the expense of downloadable video.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
If they will sell digital media games for download only that will probably be the only way to really ban used games. Meaning no more disc. Not sure who they will do it. Although why not go the route that many ubisoft games are going and ea games where you buy a used game but cant play online unless you buy a passport code. Making all games require a code would also make people think twice about buying a used game if i still have to buy a code for 15 dollars and a used game for 50 bucks makes it more expensive for me.
Either way i dont know what they will do but i hope we dont get the big screw job on this.

They articles indicated that you would need to connect online and basically register the game/disc to your gamertag/console.

Re: Gamestop trying to fight back...
Well as it turns out I just got a nice raise at work so that's kind of changed my thinking on this. My issue all along was about affordability but this raise drfinitely puts me over that threshold. I still don't like the idea but now I think it won't matter for me either way.
