I need a bigger hard drive...

During the next eight years, the amount of digital data produced will exceed 40 zettabytes, which is the equivalent of 5,200 GB of data for every man, woman and child on Earth, according to an updated Digital Universe study released today.
To put it in perspective, 40 zettabytes is 40 trillion gigabytes -- estimated to be 57 times the amount of all the grains of sand on all the beaches on earth. To hit that figure, all data is expected to double every two years through 2020.

Cool article I'm also interested in internet speeds and how wireless internet and cell phone providers will handle maxing out the radio wave spectrum.

Internet speeds will remain about the same due to no competition to the current ISP's involved. Unless Googles fiber project starts taking over more and more places we'll continue to get screwed. The USA is already out of the top 10 in average internet speed and I don't see that getting any better. Wireless will get to a certain point and then most likely plateau. They'll find a happy medium just like cable/dsl providers have. Give the people just enough to satisfy them and squeeze as much profit out of it as they can.

Totally agree that is why I'm hoping Google fiber does succeed I'm tired of seeing a $25 for less then 1 MB of download speed.

Geography really. US is a huge area with a lot of people and a non-government ran telco. If you squished 350 million people into Texas you'd see the US making plans to roll out Gig connections to the home. That being said the US is actually doing a lot as far as government assistance to push telco's to build fiber networks. Small towns all across Montana have put the infrastructure in place for Fiber to the home.
The part that is lacking is the backbone. More trunk lines need to be run across the US to get the speeds to everyone. That's where it falls back to the US being too big for us to keep up in speed. I doubt much will be done for backbone until the switch to IPv6 is done.
