So instead of posting countless threads on here about Borderlands 2 I want to share with you guys the thread that I've been checking out over on the BL2 forum. Tons and tons of information that they update every time more info comes out.

I've been paying pretty close attention to this game and I've never seen anything mentioning needing an online pass to play.

Gearbox doesn't normally do the online pass thing, so it's pretty safe to say you'll be able to rent and play.
