Just a question. What makes the VW or Japanese console better? Not that I like the BMW one either.

I believe it's taken out of a BMW, so I would guess that's what he had to work with. Most the guys on hack a day are on fairly limited budgets.

BMW interior component are pretty poor in all but the highest spec cars, so, assuming he was working with a limited budget, this would likely be from a low-end scrapper. Also, from an aesthetics point of view, I believe the Japanese always do really nice stuff, same with VW/VAG.
