We're Talkin About Practice
I just want to get a feel for everyone's opinion on practice night. Last week we had a significant drop off in attendance. I'm sure some of you just didnt want to play Uplink, some probably find practice night borring, ...etc.
We are tossing around the idea of running two practice nights. One being a casual/fun/themed night and the other a more serious strategy based practice. Both types of practice have their benefits. Do you prefer one or the other? What would you like to see us do with practice night?

I like the idea of the practices nights to work out strategies for game modes that can help us win those war matches. like snd. dom i don't see need to work on everyone has that figured out. hardpoint maybe but we can watch those videos or look at the maps for them.

Re: We're Talkin About Practice
Some thoughts .... let me lead by saying I missed the last practice more due to oversight than intent. Regardless, I feel some practice is always warranted when prepping for clan wars.
1. Walk throughs of maps in a new game (or after a DLC drop) is useful, at least initially. There is a need to get universal familiarity and to facilitate communication by identifying landmarks and/or check points, i.e. red building, Dom C, etc. But it doesn't have be done for every game mode, e.g. most know Dom so unless there is something unusual or critical to point out then why spend the time.
2. No need for so much time sparring against ourselves. What it lacks is the "fog of war" and the randomness gotten when playing against the public. We know each other for the most part (except for new recruits) and many of our moves are predictable (even Sticky's ) so little is gained. Besides, no plan survives the first shot fired, so playing the public tests how well we can adapt and recover, and mesh based upon how well we "feel" our team mates. That is what wins clan wars.
3. What is useful is to develop intel on how others play. We could share more about how we see others fight and win, what moves they have, what strats they use, and what terrain they hold. Such info would help us adapt more quickly during play and allow us to see what is developing around us in the fight (situational awareness). For example, if we see that a certain location is often taken by a sniper to cover another location (kill zone) then that is important - we then must deny them that overwatch spot and take it for ourselves to gain that same advantage. Much better than whining about getting our melons popped every time we enter their kill zone.
4. Sometimes we all forget the little tactical things, such as:
a. identifying avenues of advance/approach so as to plan how to control them
b. flanking defenders or snipers
c. identifying engagement areas (aka kill zones) and letting the enemy come to us to get caught in them (works real well with "a." above) - some call this camping but this tactic has been around since prehistoric times
d. taking the high ground (great for overwatching locations and getting those long shots)
e. paying attention to map flips (rushing in for the kills can set you up to give away more than you get)
f. working in pairs or trips to cover each other and maximize fires on tangos or locations
g. taking a brief halt and looking behind you (we all have been surprised by that mystery spawn)
My 2 cents. Thx.

Agreed with not practicing game modes like DOM because we typically dominate that game mode. Hardpoint we already went over in practice and there are videos for that. Same with going over call outs those too are in the videos.

I like it when we go vs each other, personally. We can point out strengths/weaknesses in our offense/defense that way. Also it makes for tough competition which is always a plus.

Conscious,
You're absolutely right. Playing against these guys has always been the most intense games I've ever played. I get killed far more when playing my clanmates than the public. But what you need to understand is that's a direct result of what AirCav was saying. I get killed more playing these guys because they know my tendencies, my habits, my weaknesses, as well as my strengths. That's not a coincidence. After playing with AirCav for close to 10 years I know he'll be around the corner squatting with a shotgun (according to the map and goal I'm trying to achieve). Other maps he'll be close to the objective doing over-watch switching corners with each kill so he's not predictable. These are things that we all know instantly. You have recently joined us and understandably don't know each players tendencies as well.
What AirCav is saying is that it's great to run against each other-- but in order to get the best out of your training you need a skirmish from time to time with a team you're not as familiar with (i.e. public lobbies). That will be a good barometer of where you stand.

Re: We're Talkin About Practice
@Air7Cav
You bring up some very good points. I am currently working on getting videos together for the new DLC maps so that we have Hardpoint locations w/rotations and call outs. Those maps won't be a factor in clan wars just yet but they will be eventually. As far as scrimmaging our teammates vs scrimmaging the public that maybe something we start doing. Learning how the public utilizes and reacts to strats is important info.

Yeah, that makes sense. Running up against you guys is definitely new to me but I can see how you guys can predict each other.

Re: We're Talkin About Practice
Just for reference, I don't even make a note of who is on the other team during our practices
Really practice shouldn't be the only time you play the game. In my opinion you do the practices to learn things. Then you go out and play the public the rest of that week, later that night, during clan wars, etc to solidify that knowledge.
Honestly in the 9 years I've played with the clan I can only generally infer what will happen.
Aircav - Will sit back at the objective and defend
Sticky - Will go to an optimal place to see the most people/kill them
OC - Will try to defend the most important objective, usually moving around good vantage points
Will any of that effect how I play? Not particularly. All of those tendencies are the same things everyone does in other games.
While I agree playing the public is great, it's probably not the optimal way to practice specific ideas.
PS: In GoW we would do scrims against other full teams fairly often. This was the best of both worlds. See a good, organized team and how they approach the objectives, what they do, etc, and be able to work on specific maps and gametypes.
Final - Unless we setup scrimages (and likely get slaughtered) I think doing practices vs each other is the best way to improve specific maps, modes, etc ... supplemented with public games afterward.

Sorry Knightowl... It hard for me to show up at practice because I work 3rd shift so I have to get ready and leave around the time practice starts.

And Atrum will snipe at the first chance he gets while Klown is a runner/gunner, dancing fool who will try to dodge bullets.
Hmmm..thanks for proving my point, even if unintentionally. LOL

Re: We're Talkin About Practice
I agree with Atrum 100%. At practices I make a point of trying not to prejudge the other team based on the members since I won't be able to do that in random games, and instead practice the strategy we set and adjust in game as needed. Now intra-clan tournaments, on the other hand, I always look at who is on the other team and try to guess how each will play, cause I want to win that phat loot.

Re: We're Talkin About Practice
I'm NOT doubting that. But I also know that it's human nature to say "who's on team 2"...Oh crap they got Sticky, Miller, Tico, and Droopy. It's just human nature, whether in lobby or on a basketball court. You have to check who's on the other team to see what your best strategy will be to win. In public lobbies it doesn't matter because you simply don't know the skill level or tendencies of those players. Even if you're doing it subconsciously, trust me....you're doing it!
That's all I'm saying.
That's all I'm saying.
