Xbox One Will Not Require Internet, Restrict Used Games
Microsoft has changed its policies regarding Xbox One’s internet requirement, used game restrictions and more. Contrary to the details announced earlier this month,Microsoft has now confirmed news originally reported on Giant Bomb that Xbox One will no longer require an internet connection to play offline games or need to check in every 24 hours; instead, internet will only be required when initially setting up the console. Like on Xbox 360, "playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."
Xbox One will also no longer restrict used games, and will instead allow discs to be exchanged in the same way they are on Xbox 360 with no additional restrictions for trade-ins or lending games to friends. The system is also no longer be region locked and all downloaded games will function the same way whether your console is connected or not.
Microsoft's decision follows mass confusion following the announcement of Xbox One in May. At E3 last week, Sony announced similar policies for PlayStation 4, which will not require an internet connection or periodic authentication and does not restrict used games.

Re: rumor was true
They should have done this the day after E3 was over might as well say "we fucked up" instead of continue to burn bridges hoping for a different outcome. I still feel the overall decisions Microsoft made in presenting their console in such a way will affect the upcoming battle between the 3 titans, but who knows like celebrity news it seems to fade if nothing new surfaces. To be far xbox 360 > PS3, It might just be in the this next generation Sony's PS4 > Xbone.
Re: rumor was true
The thing that makes me happy now is that once this news settles a little bit we'll maybe get back to just talking about games, which is what it should be about in the first place.S7 Panzer wrote:They should have done this the day after E3 was over might as well say "we fucked up" instead of continue to burn bridges hoping for a different outcome. Re: rumor was true
I think this might end up costing us the 'family plan' sharing feature though... at least that's what I got from the MS Press Release.

Yeah, they specifically say no more sharing of digital content. Thanks a lot d-bags. Now I don't get access to a super-awesome feature and a bunch of clowns can keep supporting the industry leech gamestop. Big win for... well no one useful to society.S7 Epic wrote:I think this might end up costing us the 'family plan' sharing feature though... at least that's what I got from the MS Press Release.

Re: rumor was true
I have to admit I am a bit torn by this as I love my ability to use gamefly but I was willing to drop it in favor of a new digital era for consoles. Part of me wanted for MS to nut up and just say "F U we are sticking to our guns". The Family Share plan was a pretty huge plus for them and now it's gone.

Re: rumor was true
Yeah, the family share was going to be pretty epic. I always buy games but rarely get DLC so it would have been nice to get access to that from a friend to try it out.

Re: rumor was true
Might just have to postpone the PS4 for a bit longer now that it appears rentals are back "in". I do hope the share system still works, and this is only for "disc based games".

Re: rumor was true
You'll be able to share your discs just as you can now. The thing that changed is that there will no longer be the "Family Sharing" option for the digital games. You'll be able to use your disc exactly as you use them now.

Re: rumor was true
Sharing is apparently out completely at this point in time. Digital or otherwise, sadly.
EDIT: Specifically "Family sharing" thing where all your games were shared in the cloud. You can now lend a copy of the game obviously.

Re: rumor was true
Everyone is saying that the family sharing is off the table, but is that confirmed through MS? I mean if we are still paying for Xbox Gold then we still have the cloud access. So why would they punish the people who pay for live? I think they should keep that in place as an incentive to get people who are on the fence still to the Xbox side.

Re: rumor was true
Either way is fine by me. Kinda agree with husker wish they would have held to their guns but the military issue kinda sucked
I think tgey listened to the public
just wish it would have come out sooner could have saved alot of drama and cool points

Re: rumor was true
Yea, this confirms the family share is done (for now) and you will have to keep the disc in the drive to play the game. Both of those are steps backwards, but it solves the DRM issues that the squeaky wheels complained about.
