Windows 8?
Has anyone tried using Windows 8 yet? If so, what do you think about it? I've been thinking of upgrading from Windows 7, but I've been hearing mixed reviews about Windows 8, so I'd like to hear what you think about it.

Re: Windows 8?
Don't do it...
"garbage" is the word that first comes to mind.
I will also give you some advice now, go to SourceForge immediately and download "classic Shell" you'll be glad you did. This will bring back classic start menu, toolbar for Explorer and other things you're accustomed to seeing which Win 8 does not ship with. Microsoft should be ashamed for not shipping Windows 8 with this configuration option for their longtime desktop users. Otherwise I say it's just a 2013 version of Vista....and you know how well Vista did right???

Re: Windows 8?
Oh god... ignore anything on BGR. I check that site daily and 90% of their articles are terrible.
I have windows 8 on one of my laptops. I've only had a few chances to use it as most the time I'm either on my desktop or my linux laptop. So far the experience has been good. It works well, anyone under 25 years old or so will have no problem with the interface (us digital natives just don't have problems getting used to new UIs). You can also get to an actual desktop by hitting tab. For some reason everyone thinks you can't get an actual desktop. You can, it's in there. You can really do anything you could in windows before, you just have to learn the new way to get there (just like going from XP to 7)
The only reason I don't have it on my desktop is because I may or may not have some 'special' things running that I don't think are supported in Windows 8. They might be, I just haven't bothered to check.

haha, I saw you edited as soon as I posted my response. I saw that purchasing the Windows 8 Pro was pretty cheap, so i was thinking about giving it a go. It's just that most people who complain about it have no idea how to use it or hate it for not having the start menu even though you can download the classic shell for free and I think there was another way... not too sure. Others who took time to know how it works seem to like it though.

You'll be sorry.....
Do me a favor, come back to this thread and tell me the truth after you've bought and used it for a few.
Let me know if you love it.

I'm just giving him things to read (other than what we say) and think about.

If there are issues not related to UI, then those are what I'd rather know about. I wouldn't mind learning how the new UI works. If anything, I could just buy Windows 8 Pro while it's still cheap now and stay with Windows 7 for now.

Unfortunately I haven't used it enough to see any. I've only done basic web related things. I'll probably have some time to play with it this weekend. I'll try installing some of the programs I use (Photoshop, League, Skype, Mumble, Putty, Notepad++, etc) and see how they work.

Re: Windows 8?
I personally find Windows 8 to be a step back. If I wanted to use an OS for tablet specific computer I would just use IceCream. I will be sticking with Windows 7 unless something drastically changes.
EDIT: I heard League of Legends has a problem with Windows 8 because of the Panda Media Booster which is uses.

Re: Windows 8?
Windows 8 is a great OS and continues the good work that Win7 set in motion, especially in regards of speed and the minimal hardware required to run well.
It is not a tablet specific OS. It is an OS that you can adapt to your needs. Got a traditional desktop PC, fine, just set it up and use it as you would Windows 7. Got a touch-screen laptop that you'd like to make use of? Fine, W8 will handle that too and using the Metro UI like that is great.
There are a lot of people that don't like change or have become too engrained with the same old Windows, and thats fine but this version of Windows NEEDED to happen. It's called progress and MS have done a mighty fine job with it.
I agree that it takes a little bit of getting used to, but it's for the better.
