Mac Book Pro owners?

Bought my daughter a new Mac Book Pro today (all the bells and whistles). She just graduated highschool, headed to PA for college this fall and starts working for the FEDs over the summer next week. She has a HP laptop (bought her senior year)-- but for a present wanted the Mac Book Pro and the Thunderbolt Android phone. I thought about it, and since she's a good kid with AMAZING grades I gave in. Anyone here have the Mac Book Pro? Anything "special" I should download on this thing? Already got the software loaded, along with Windows (excel, word, powerpoint) for Mac.

Any other suggestions??

-apps like drop box and ever note that can be used with the laptop and phone.

Caffeine - Used to stop the screen from auto-dimming for periods of time.
Flip4Mac - WMV Codec.
VLC Player - Self explanatory.
Chrome - It pwns safari.
Transmissions - If she uses torrents.
Burn - CD/DVD burning.
UnRarX - For file decompression.

Also, give her $30 to get the OS X Lion update when that comes out in July.

I think you just entered the Father Hall of Fame for that purchase...and proven Fathers are big softies for their daughters.

- Adium is one of the best IM clients on the Mac.
- 1Password - to keep track of passwords - can sync w/Android app
- OS X Lion when it comes out next month.
- Parallels - if a class requires Windows she needs this.
- Facetime Desktop app if you have an iPhone or iPod touch w/camera. If not Skype.
- Portable HD or Desktop one for backing up computer via Time Machine
- See if you can find Desktop or Andoid equivalents of the apps on the following link - http://www.apple.com/education/apps/

Those are off the top of my head...when I think of more, I'll add them to the list.

But the problem is they realize there's nothing really off-limits and that you'll say yes to just about anything no matter how tough you pretend to be.

Doubt it...I have an iPad that she uses whenever.
When I think about it that maybe why she got on the "Apple" bandwagon.

I'm glad I have a boy...of course that just means I have to stop my wife from giving him everything...he's got her wrapped around his chunky little fingers...

Right now with Apple it's hard to tell you too much because they're about to drop Lion, then iCloud. They're adding their owen version of other software vendors products in the next OS X and iOS. However, the ones listed here should be fine.

I've had a taste of iCloud with MobileMe. I remember walking into the Apple store to get my iPhone 4, and as soon as I was able to sync, my contacts, bookmarks, calendar, and email were ready to go. Now, I'm getting a taste of iTunes auto syncing and it's great. I know Android has been doing this for a while, but Apple is doing a good job of it.

Been playing with it for awhile since she got it (whenever she actually leaves it alone for a second) and I have to tell you, I like it more than I thought I would.

Hell just froze over!

Honestly, I love my MacBook pro, and mine's about 4+ years old. Since it's an older machine built to run 32bit programs, I do notice lagtime when I'm running a major 64bit Pro Application like Aperture 3. But everything else works great. I would like to get an iMac next year. I'll just use continue my iPad for mobile computing.

That heart of UNIX is why ish runs so well...

As far as iPad, I would wait to see what the iPad 3 offers. Personally, I think the iPad2 was a minor update because Apple wanted to wait and see what everyone else brought to the market.

iPad 3 will be a major upgrade, and reports say that it will have a retina display with more than twice the resolution of the current iPad, and I think we'll see specs closer to the current MacBook Air in the iPad 3 as well. But that's just MHO.

I'm def looking forward to the iPhone 5 (or 4Gs or whatever it's called). It should have a slightly large display, the A5 chipset, and boast iOS 5.
