Looking to buy a new Desktop CPU Empty Looking to buy a new Desktop CPU

Post by S7 Wiggles1778 Wed Jun 08, 2011 5:24 am

So long story short... i haven't been like up to date on comps since i bought my last one... 6 years ago...
my last comp had like a 250MB HD, 2GB Ram, Windows XP... its was actually pimp... at the time...

the problem is, I know nothing about whats good now... and what price isnt redic...

I'm looking to go thru Dell (since we get a big discount for working where i do)... and i see they have Alienware stuff... so that's what i'm leaning toward on a place to buy...

What I'm looking to do:
- Gaming (I want something that is going to be good for at least a couple years...)
- Record/edit video (and stream)... which i'm guessing i'll need to get from an outside source?

What should I be looking as minimums?
WTF is a "factory-overclocked, liquid-cooled processor"?
Single Video Card? Dual Video Card?

They're negligible.

What is the discount? AW is already WAYYY over-priced. Give me a budget and i'll give you the components...as i'm sure Atrum et al will too.

NVIDIA GTX 560 TI
1T hard Drive
at least a 800 watt power supply .
and make sure it water cooled as its WIN

and if you dont mind spending more to have a company make it go with something from
either
ibuypower.com or Cyberpowerpc.com

Everyone has that geek friend that can build a PC...use your network...there might even be someone here that can help...maybe you pay for all the parts and shipping, then throw in a M$ Point card. I'm sure one of our uber geeks around here could help you out.

I know you're looking to stay cheap, but if you have delayed interest payment options go for something a lot more expensive, because you can pay it off monthly. Building a new comp will benefit greatly in the long run if you get the best you can NOW with your money, than to piece a bunch of low priced things together to save money in the short run, but in reality it will cost more in the long run to keep up with upgrades.

You want to build yourself something you don't have to touch, upgrade wise, for at least 4 years, and it can be done! I built my comp 3 years ago, and I haven't had to touch it at all besides getting a new heatsink (not including buying myself a Razer Naga mouse and Saitek II Eclipse Keyboard). Looking to upgrade the memory and GPU in the next year. Did it with about $1400.

Yeah, honestly just go to NewEgg and Tigerdirect, look at some of the prebuilts and see if anything is in your price range that has a 5 star rating. Then post up anything you like here.

Yea, but WOW hasn't changed any requirements in the last 3 years either Razz

Like I said in a previous post on TV's, buy the best you can afford now if you want it to last long term. Sure custom builds are going the better for the $$$, but having a payment play you can live with is as good as spending more than you can afford right now (like with Credit Cards). If you don't mind it being more of a 1-2 year cycle, go as cheap as possible and get just enough that covers what you want to do.

Wiggles, your family work on racecars...i'm sure one of them can handle a PC. They're practically paint by numbers these days. As for the finance, newegg and TigerDirect generally offer that. PLUS the parts all come with seperate warranties lasting 3+ years.

If not, eBay is actually a pretty decent place to look.

you know what... f#ck computers... its all hurts my head... and the more i read the less i understand...

and Epic you would think one of us was good with the computer stuff... but our racing is mechanical not computerized... hell digital scales for weight ratios it too much for us to handle... everything is old school...

example... i had to explain (for the 3rd time) how to change the TV from the cable box to a DVD... technology is not a skill we can handle... Evil or Very Mad
