That really is unfortunate but frankly I am surprised it doesn't happen more often. Every time I watch rally racing I am amazed these people don't get hit. They will actually stand in the course and move out of the way at the last minute. Still it's sad when it happens.

Yeah, I've seen that too. They just stand around gawking like these cars aren't real and aren't moving at breakneck speeds directly towards them. Sad, but maybe this is just the thing to make them re-consider the safety of the course. Push the spectators back a bit....behind a sturdy fence or berm.

The problem I've heard is these course are so big and rural that it's impossible to control the spectators and this is the reason there are so few races like this anymore - everytime something like this happens they don't say "hey how can we make this safer" instead they say "hey our insurance is ridiculous now, let's cancel the event." They halted the race entirely after they learned how serious the accident was. It was that driver's first off-road event and he is devestated. It could have been worse though... Just think of the calamity had OC been driving!

Here is a good example. Why would these guys just be walking down the road? At what point did that seem like a good idea?

...perfect example. Even here where you have idiots on parade in the middle of the street , it's still not even safe for the people watching. The "little wood strip" wouldn't hold the 3,000 lbs car from smacking you in the chest. Sure it's about having a good time, but if/when they lose control around that curb he's coming directly for you.
As for the dummies in the video-- sometimes you bring bad things on yourself. Like a person trampled during the running of the bulls...that's not considered an accident, you caused that pain and suffering for yourself. If they get hit because they're drunk, stupid, whatever...it's on them. I'm more concerned with making the whole experience safer for the people behind the barriers. When they coordinate and create the course through the woods, create a berm or barrier that can be taken down after the competition but keep the people safe.

Man I would be nowhere near one of those curves, definitely not on the outside of the curve. I hear you Klown, they could put up temporary barriers better than what we see there if they were just motivated to do so. Reminds me of the luge death at the olympics - nothing gets done until it's already too late.

and of course, it won't be the last... It happens all the time... minor injuries here and there... i think... if my memory is right... last death in something like this was in June of last year.. i think just 1 dead, 15 or so injuried...
was a rally car on a paved corner, clipped a group after swinging wide around a hair pin
