Windshield technology in cars?
Now it really gets dangerous
Can you imagine the distracted drivers reading text messages and half naked girl pop-up ads on the screen while your driving.
93% of the people on the road can't truly drive now. Only the other 7% have advanced licenses (limos, big rigs, etc.) and had more in depth drivers training. The rest are already putting on make-up and eating cereal behind the wheel while driving with one knee. Thanks for putting more crap in the car to kill us GM. As if your Camaro wasn't dangerous enough ( ) That's why barely 1% of cars are manual and they all park themselves and aid the driver in backing up. There was a time a man controlled his own vehicle. Someone watched iRobot a few too many times.

Re: Windshield technology in cars?
I become torn with stories like this. I actually think it's a d@mn cool idea (like iRobot) but instantly see the bad things that will come of this. Remember while Will read the windshield his car was doing the driving. It's not like everyone is responsible enough. Maybe they should restrict this only to certain people with proven good driving records. Then again, even they will become distracted and wreck.
Maybe a switch to disable while the car is moving? Not sure, but this is going to be trouble for sure.

Re: Windshield technology in cars?
It's neat and all, but it seems like it would be a big distraction. If cops can pull you over for having something hanging from rearview mirror because it's deemed as a distraction (and they need to meet their quota) then how is this technology legal to have in cars? I smell a conspiracy. I think the government is trying to prevent overpopulation by placing a bunch of distracting gadgets in vehicles.

Sounds awesome. There's a reason people my age and younger are called Digital Natives, the competent drivers can handle the digital multitasking no problem because they have grown up with it and it's second nature. It's the same thing as talking to a passenger for them.

Re: Windshield technology in cars?
Useful information like speedo, tach and warning indications are a good idea. They are things you need to see in order to operate the car effectively and safely. Putting those things on the windshield makes sense. You are going to look at them to drive so why not make them easier to see without taking your eyes off the road?
But text messages? Internet? Videos? Leave that sh1t for when you get where you are going. Best advice I can give. Get a real car with a manual transmission and enjoy the drive. Make it an event of it's own. With the right car you won't care about that text.

I'd love to be able to integrate a command line into the windshield that you could only access when in park. No more bringing the laptop around incase of downtimes.

Meh, if they didn't crash 'because of their phone' it would have been because of their make-up, or because of that song on the radio, or because their friend was talking to them, or because their friend finally got an 8-track that fits on their back, or because they saw that girl/guy on the sidewalk, etc, etc, etc.
Teens get in the most wrecks and always have (well, aside from 75+ year olds) and it'll always be that way.

Re: Windshield technology in cars?
Man used to walk everywhere, then someone tried to chew gum at the same time. cars were even more dangerous than walking, but we provide laws and training. Good laws that are enforced will help, but there are always dangers. In iRobot the cars are on invisible rails or something - if we think people are becoming worse drivers then we should be thankful for safety advances. I believe some folks would be more dangerous in a manual than auto. if someone is one of those that will neglect driving for this gadget, then they are also the ones reading the paper and will find a distraction even if they don't have this windshield display. I think this could be a really cool HUD eliminating the need for a dashboard which opens the possibility of a larger windshield leading to a safer car.

larger windshield leading to a safer car? I beg to differ.
More glass = more danger!
Less glass, more steel = safer.

I bet those d@mn strips of metal on each side of the window have caused more wrecks than anything else by obstructing vision. Once the cars hit then yeah, more steel (built properly) will help deflect and absorb the shock, so valid point.

Re: Windshield technology in cars?
My point there was that a larger windshield means more visibility so less collisions. I admit a steel cage is still necessary.

My car has a HUD that shows speed, when I use the radio (station, cd track), when fuel is low, when engine lights/oil light come on.

Was just thinking that this would be pretty cool in a motor cycle helmet. As ffar as ads go I think we aren't that far off from having built in GPS in vehicles detect what businesses you are near and tailor your ads to that. Free xm radio, ads relevant to your immediate physical location.
