I saw a video demo a few days back.

Summary: Windows 7 with Windows 8 snapped into the side of the start menu. Can be removed very easily and customized similar to a windows phone.

thats why i might  pick it up later on

It looked promising to me. I never felt the need or desire to go to windows 8. The next iteration looks like an improved Windows 7.

I'm surprised I didn't see this post. The main reason they skipped windows 9 is because of a technical problem. With windows 95 and 98 a shortcut was implemented using "windows 9" in the code so implementing windows 9 would require code reworks. Instead of changing all the needed code for the updates they did the latter and just changed the number saving money. Also be warned if you are downloading this technical preview it has a key logger so no illegal stuff or sh1t possibly could get real for you quick.
