Online Back up? Empty Online Back up?

Post by S7 OC Wed Jun 01, 2011 10:32 am

I am thinking about buying an external HD to back up my mac book but at this point I am also considering going with an online back up deals with a company like Carbonite. They offer unlimited back up from one computer. It works in a way similar to apple's time machine back up were as if you remove somthing from your computer in 30 days if you don't bring it back then it will perminately erase it. So in a way it also does not work like an external HD were you can dump stuff to make more room on a computer. You can access all your files from a smart phone (iphone) so I would not need to have music or photos on my phone. It's $59 a year there are codes to get like 10-20% off that price just need to hunt them down.

So what are your thoughs. anyone using a service like this?

Online Back up? Empty Re: Online Back up?

Post by S7 mrmiller Wed Jun 01, 2011 10:42 am

The only thing about online back-up is that I would be backing up over 1TB of stuff off 2-3 computers, so the time it would take (and UL Bandwidth it would steal from my gaming) would be insane. I like the portable hard drive you can back up all your computers on, and even archive stuff you most likely will never need to access again. There is always Orb and other remote programs that will let you access your home library with your iPhone if you think that is necessary. My 2cents, but your situation is different with only one computer and probably on a few hundred gig of data.

We have a lot of customers that do online backups. Carbonite works great if you need it. I personally just use an external HD. Way less expensive, more accessible, and really just easier.

I have a 1TB Western Digital made specifically for Macs. Works great. Have it partitioned so that 500 gigs are there for Time Machine and the other 490+ are for other storage.

Mmm, that one has a lot of bad reviews. I use their FreeAgent line, but mine is mainly for occasional storage and media streaming so if you're using it daily you might want to go with either a higher end Seagate or a Western Digital with good reviews.

I also use Seagate's FreeAgent externals. I'm currently using a 2TB model I got for my birthday in January, and if you're looking into getting one I'd suggest the 3TB since it's reasonably priced (and just a stone's throw from what you'd pay for 2TB anyway)

Had to RMA it last month because I dropped it, but Seagate was easy with the return. Only downside was that I had to pay the shipping TO Seagate myself. They paid for the return back to me.

I have a TB Seagate USB external for the Linux box and a 40GB one for the windows PC my wife uses just for email, quick web access, and bills, etc. She doesn't keep a lot there just a few pics and word docs.

I was looking to get a 1TB so that was why I was going to jump for a 2TB. the 3TB is just probably to much and I was looking to get a HD for a low price.

109-$20(CUSTWEEKJUNE) promocode=$89, not the greatest deal but pretty good about $20 more than most 1tb

Having the extra space is a godsend for me because I do a lot of high def screen recording and editing with Fraps for WoW. Every 4 minutes is 4gb, and the course of one night of recording I could go through 500gb worth of space.

Fraps saves it raw like that, I can't help it!

It's a lot smaller once the video is edited though.

Use something besides fraps? Powerdirector 9 has some decent features and has editing built in. = win.

It looks the same, with one being a referb. You can find some that are network drives, and plug into your router so you can back-up and access from anywhere. I'm not sure how good they work or the speed of them, but it seems like it would be really handy.

On a side note- I picked up a 500gig on close out at Target this weekend for $20. I didn't really want only 500 gig, but it will hold all my media so I can transfer between computers.
